Description:

Plan and design the State's classified road and bridge system, jetties and slipways. Administer grants to councils for the maintenance and construction of local roads. Ensure, so far as is practicable, the provision of co-ordinated, economic and efficient transport services adequate to meet the demands of the public. As part of a general reorganisation of the Tasmanian State Service, on 17 July 1989 the Department of Main Roads was relieved of its construction functions and renamed the Department of Roads and Transport. A process of integration then began, leading to the formal amalgamation of the Transport Department on 1 July 1990. On the same date the Metropolitan Transport Trust came under the administrative control of the Department andoperated as a Division of it and its successors. On 3 February 1993 the Department was amalgamated with the Department of Construction to form the short-lived Department of Transport and Works.
