Investigate, develop and implement Government policy on racing. Develop an efficient and viable racing and breeding industry. Registration, collection of tax and supervision of bookmakers and on-course totalisators. Regulation of racing activities, including allocation of racing dates and appointment of stipendiary stewards.
The Directorate came into being when the administration of racing and gaming were separated in 1984. On 1 July 1990 it came under the administrative control of the Department of Tourism, Sport and Recreation and on 12 September it was reconstituted as an "Authority".
