The Board was constituted by an Order in Council on 10th May 1950 to maintain, manage and regulate public health care within the Longford area. This was to be known as the Toosey Memorial Public Hospitals District.;;;;Concern was expressed over the title and considering the Board was constituted to manage health care in the District and not only the Hospital, the name was changed to the Longford Public Hospitals District by an Order in Council on 5th June 1951. Despite the name change, confusion continued, due partly to an on-going misunderstanding over whether the Hospital Boards served a district or simply managed a hospital.;;;;The State's Public Hospital Districts were merged under an Order in Council on 19th June 1990 into three, Hobart, Launceston and North West Regional Public Hospitals Districts. The management of public health in the Longford district became part of the Launceston region and its corresponding Board. Statutory Rule 1990 Number 98, which abolished the Longford Board and District described it as the Toosey District.
