Description:
The Board of Queenstown District had been using the name West Coast for some time, following the expansion of teh District to include two other municipalities. Questions about the validity of actions taken in this name led the Government to legislate in 1983 and by Order-in-Council to formally re-name the District. Following the re-organisation of local government on the West Coast the Municipality of Lyell was substituted for Queenstown and Gormanston (SR1986/198) from 15 September 1986. As an interim step in the re-organiosation of the State's health services the Public Hospital Districts were consolidated into three regional bodies on 19 June 1990. West Coast became part of the North West Regional Public Hospitals District (SR1990/98).~
