Description:
To institute and undertake criminal proceedings on behalf of the Crown, advise police on prosecutions, to serve as solicitor or counsel to the Crown as directed by the Solicitor-General or Attorney-General. The Office of the Crown Advocate was created to separate the day-to-day Crown law work from the advisory and constitutional law functions of the Solicitor-General. The preponderance of criminal prosecutions led to the reconstitution of the office as the Director of Public Prosecutions on 9 May 1986.~
