Description:
Pilot commercial production began in Tasmania in 1964/65,and in 1972 the Commonwealth and State Governments agreed to restrict production of poppies to Tasmania for reasons of security. The agreement was conditional on the estblishment of the Poppy Advisory and Control Board to, advise on all matters relating to cultivation, production and transport of opium poppies and poppy material, collect and collate statistical information and prepare reports, liaise with appropriate Commonwealth Departments in the matter of Australias obligations under the international Drug Conventions.~
Legislation Creating:
S.R. 6, Gazetted 3/2/1993, transferred control of the board from the Department of Primary Industry and Fisheries to the Department of Justice.
