Agency Number:
Start Date:
01 Oct 1987
Description:
The Act provided for a Board of 6 members of whom two were ex-officio appointments, the Director of Lands, Parks and Wildlife and the Director of Tourism, and a third must live in the municipality and have "special knowledge" of the site. The land and functions were transferred to the Board from the National Parks and Wildlife Service. The Board's financial arrangements were amended in 1989 (Act No. 5 of 1989). The Board was required to balance history and archaeology with tourism yet at the same time to become a viable commercial enterprise as soon as practicable. The tension between these objectives ultimately led to the resignation of the Board in 1998 and the appointment of a new Board more focused on the heritage needs of the site.;;PAHSMA is a Government Business Enterprise
