Develop an efficient and viable racing and breeding industry. Register, collect tax from and supervise bookmakers and on-course totalisators. Regulate racing activities, including allocation of racing dates and appointment of stipendiary stewards. The Authority was created by reconstituting the former Racing Directorate.
The Authority comprises 4 members, 2 of whom are appointed by the Governor for terms of up to three years. Neither may be directly involved in racing or in the management of a racing club or organisation. The other 2 members are the Chairman of the Totalizator Agency Board and the Director of Racing.
The Authority was transferred to the administrative control of the Department of Construction on 18 February 1992 following a change of government. On 3 February 1993 it reverted to the Department of Tourism, Sport and Recreation. When that Department was restructured on 27 March 1996 the Authority was transferred to the Department of Primary Industry and Fisheries.
Effective 1 May 1998 the Authority was reconstituted as Racing Tasmania.
