| Description: |
The Department was created when all functions not directly associated with vocational training were removed from its predecessor. This focus was strengthened on 21 May 1997 (SR1997/54) when responsibility for the development of skilled engineering technologists was transferred from Tasmania Development and Resources. On 1 January 1998 the Training Operations Division, the Institute of Adult Education and the four TAFE institutes were amalgamated as TAFE Tasmania. The change was administrative as TAFE remained a part of the Department until it was amalgamated with Education.
