Description:
The purpose of the home was to rehabilitate boys who had offended. Initially known as the State Farm School for Boys, the home underwent a name change in 1926 to become the Ashley Home for Boys in response to a recommendation from a Government committee appointed to enquire into the working of the institution. In 1950, a fire substantially destroyed the Ashley Home for Boys and the Inquiry into the Control and Management of Ashley Boys' Home in 1951 recommended a new Home be established for boys up to 14 years old. This lead to the opening of Wybra Hall in 1956. Boys were organised into classes with those on their best behaviour going to the Privilege Cottage.;;;;Located in Deloraine in northern Tasmania, the Ashley Home for Boys serviced the whole state. The Ashley Youth Detention Centre, declared as a detention centre under the Youth Justice Act 1997, is situated on the former site of Ashley Home for Boys.;;;;Some files refer to sections by abbreviations. The sections are:;;* S/U meaning Secured Unit;;* O/S meaning Open Section;;* P/C meaning Privilege Cottage
