The Foresnsic Biology Unit provided a statewide service to the Tasmania Police, Tasmanian Coroners, the Tasmanian Justice Department and the Commonwealth Family Law Courts.
Scientific examination of biological evidence from crime scenes was undertaken to identify the source of biological material in relation to an alleged crime. Evidence was brought to the laboratory by trained police or the laboratory personnel attended and the evidence themselves.
On 1 August 1995 the Unit merged with the Forensic Pathology Unit and the Government Analyst Laboratory to form the Government Analytical and Forensic Laboratory.
