At the end of 1963 the quarters formally occupied by the Royal Hobart Hospital Pathology Services were acquired, for a new State Health Laboratory. Such a Laboratory as this had been a pressing need for sometime. The immediate policy will be to step up Papanicolaou Smears and to perform bacteriology for the Directors of Public Health and Tuberculosis. At a later date it is hoped to extend testing to some branches of virology and mycology and to make a urvey of fungus diseases, both animal and human in Tasmania.;;By 1979 the Laboratory was providing a statewide service in Cytology, Cytogenetics, Public Health Microbiology and phenylketenuria testing of new born babies.
