Series notes:
Records basic personal information, previous medical history, and details of treatment for patients in both the Lachlan Park Hospital and Millbrook Rise Psychopathic Hospital (which merged to form the Royal Derwent Hospital).

The system of keeping patient notes in bound volumes on each ward at Lachlan Park was replaced by a system utilising pillar binders from which the sheets for individual patients could be removed on death or discharge in the 1930s. Millbrook Rise used this system from the outset.

Initially the sheets removed from ward Case Books were placed into separate volumes according to whether the patient was male or female and then dead or discharged but later this was abandoned in favour of a single alphabetical sequence of all patients (from both institutions).

It was the latter sequence which was transferred first and so consignment one is a single alphabetical sequence whereas consignment 2 contains four separate alphabetical sequences.

These records are part of the holdings of the Tasmanian Archives
