The Energy directorate was established c1979 to centralise energy policy-making independent of the Hydro-Electric Commission. By 1981 it had been down-graded to a Policy Unit and its functions were re-absorbed by the HEC in 1984 or 1985. The Directorate/Unit operated its own filing system but some files were either top-numbered into the main registry (see PSC1) or transferred to the HEC when the Unit was disbanded (AA520). The files have an alpha-numeric subject classification, the alphabetic classifications being as follows: COM Committees, CON Energy Conservation, EAC Energy Advisory Council, ENV Environmental matters, ESO Energy sources, GCO Government committees, HEC Hydro Electric Commission, MIS Miscellaneous, PAR Parliamentary and related matters, PET Petroleum, POL Energy Policy, RDI Resource Development and Infrastructure, RES Energy Research and Statistics, SOM Staff and Office Matters. No files in the categories ENV and PET are contained in this series. The category GCO does not appear in the copy of the file register in AB726/1. In most cases the above categories are followed by a fixed numeric category, but a few surviving files have an annual single number within the alphabetical category.~
