These cards register departmental correspondence & have 24 subject headings, plus municipalities which are numbered 1-47. A list of subject headings and municipal nos. is attached. The cards can be used as finding aids for all series, which were originally contained in one filing system. This has, however, been fragmented, with a new series being created for most subjects, and the subdivision of other subject headings. An example of the amalgamation of file nos. is shown in PWD35/71 where all files about the Denison Canal, irrespective of file nos., have been located : 10/405-70 (Harbour works & Marine Boards), 12 Jetties, 2/317-1 (Bridges) and B1574, the current number used for bridges. Some subjects originally included in a subject, eg Cages over rivers contained in Bridges & Municipal files, have been assigned a separate series (PWD36) by AOT. There is, however, some overlap between related subjects and not all files in the original subject group have been put in separate series - eg File 10, Harbour Works and Marine Board files are most likely to be found in PWD 37, jetties, which in the original system was file No. 12. PWD1 also contains a range of most file numbers in AC408 and needs to be checked. Until full inventories are available, a box list of files in PWD1 is attached.~
