How to Use:
VOLUME 1
Records the date of registration, number, name (including changes) and date struck off for:
- 177 foreign companies registered under the 1895 Act. Not all dates are recorded giving a range (by) 15 March 1897 - 27 August 1920.
- 575 Tasmanian companies registered under the 1869 Act. If the date information is recorded correctly then existing companies must have been renumbered when the Act commenced. Not all dates are recorded giving a range (by) 29 June 1863 - 31 January 1921.
- Companies registered under the 1920 Act. This starts at number 1 on 4 February 1921 and continues to number 2573 about 24 May 1955 but there are gaps after number 2520.
VOLUME 2
A recycled volume originally used for Limited Partnerships was ruled up as a Companies Register starting at number 2500. It records company number, name (including at least some changes), address (date struck off is added to this column), nominal capital, state of incorporation (for foreign companies), number of subscribers and number of shares. Date of registration is added from June 1956. The last entry is for company number 5217 in 1964. (Unlike previous changes the sequence of registration numbers continued under the 1962 Act instead of reverting to number 1 again.)
VOLUME 3
Records date, number, company name, address of registered office, name of (usually) firm of solicitors lodging documents, nominal capital, number of subscribers, number of shares, origin (if foreign company) and date struck off. Company numbers 5200 to 13319 registered between 4 September 1964 and 12 January 1979.
VOLUME 4
Has the same format as Volume3. Company numbers 13320 to 21760 registered between 12 January 1979 and 25 January 1985. The last two pages in this volume record companies transferring their registration to or from Tasmania in 1983 and 1984.
VOLUME 5
Records date, number, company name, address of registered office, name of (usually) firm of solicitors lodging documents, place of origin (if recognised company), place of origin (if recognised foreign company), place of origin (if foreign company) and date struck off. Company numbers 21761 to 30046 registered between 25 January 1985 and 13 July 1988. The last two pages in this volume record companies transferring their registration to or from Tasmania between 1983 and 1987.
VOLUME 6
Has the same format as Volume 5. Company numbers 30047 to 35402 registered between 12 July 1988 and 19 December 1990.
Series notes:
The first volume of this series was compiled in the Companies Office some time in the 1950s either from earlier registers or from the files themselves. The second volume was a recycled Register of Limited Partnerships. Thereafter the volumes were printed and bound specifically as the Company Register. Content varies from volume to volume (see notes on How to Use series).
The state registers closed after 1990 and a single national registration system was put in place.
