Series notes:
A file was created for each parcel of land acquired by the Crown and details of the transaction were recorded on a register sheet. Most sheets have cross-references to the Land Case file (series LSD35) or the Valuation file (series AA560). There is provision on each sheet for file references of the agency acquiring the land. These are usually only used for Forestry and Public Works. About 1980 the Crown Land files were converted to Property Files and some sheets are endorsed with the PF number. All property files were subsequently converted to a new general correspondence series, part of which has been transferred to the Archives Office as AB567. The Department maintains volumes of converted file numbers. The Crown Land files had a "CL" prefix followed by a three tier numeric arrangement in which the first two digits identified the agency on whose behalf the land was acquired and the third digit was used where needed to differentiate categories of land use. There was no consistency across agencies in the allocation of the third category. Thereafter the files were arranged alphabetically according to the parish in which the land was situated. The numbers used to identify agencies were as follows:2.1 Department of Agriculture 2.2 Education Department 2.3 Forestry Department/Commission 2.4 Department of Industrial Development (previously Directorate) 2.5 Mines Department 2.6 Police Department 2.9 Public Works Department (Land acquired for purposes other than roadworks. There is a separate sequence of 17 volumes, numbered 2.9.4, for land acquired by PWD for roadworks.) 2.10 Social Welfare Department 2.11 Lands Department (previously Lands and Surveys Department) 2.12 Tourism and Immigration Department 2.13 Public Trustee 2.14 Attorney-General's Department 2.15 Department of Labour and Industry 2.16 Premier and Chief Secretary's Department 2.17 Supreme Court and Sheriff's Department 2.18 Department of Film Production 2.19 Agricultural Bank 2.20 State Library 2.21 Attorney-General's Department - Magistrates Courts 2.22 Treasury 2.24 Government Printer 2.25 Supply and Tender Department 2.26 Government Offices (for various Departments) 2.27 Rural Fires Board 2.28 Attorney-General's Department - Office accommodation 2.29 National Parks and Wildlife Service 3.1 Closer Settlement Board 3.2 Commonwealth of Australia 3.3 Housing Department 3.4 Hydro Electric Commission 3.5 Hobart City Council 3.6 Rivers and Water Supply Commission 3.7 Transport Department 3.8 Marine Board of Hobart 3.9 Metropolitan Transport Trust 3.10 Inland Fisheries Commission 3.11 Tasmanian Grain Elevators Board 3.12 Metropolitan Water Board 3.13 Museums 3.14 Launceston Flood Protection Board 3.15 Animals and Birds Protection Board (see also NPWS) 3.16 Tasmanian Government Insurance Office 3.17 Tasmanian Botanical Gardens 3.18 Mental Health Services Commission 3.19 Ambulance Board of Southern Tasmania 4.1 Beauty Point Advisory Committee (re Landslip) 4.5 Access Road to Sub-division 4.6 Surrendered land 4.9 Reserve 4.14 Public O ffices Accommodation Committee~ 4.22 National Parks and Wildlife Service. There are 16 volumes arranged in the above order followed by 17 volumes, numbered 2.9.4, for land acquired by the Public Works department for roadworks. The final volume in the series has no numbering and is for land acquired on behalf of Public Hospital Boards. The sheets are arranged alphabetically by the names of the Boards. Few of the sheets in this volume have references to file numbers. Researchers seeking further information should consult the minutes of the relevant Board.
