Series notes:
Recovered as estrays. In general these warrants accompanied prisoners sent to various probation stations and many of the forms are annotated on the reverse side with prisoner movements. This particular series relates only to Port Arthur and can therefore be considered as a sample. It shows the administrative process of the disposal of prisoners sentenced to further transportation. In this instance most of the warrants were addressed to the Superintendent of Port Arthur and were issued from the Convict Department (and Prisoners' Barracks, Hobart). Some issued by the Police Department were made in the first instance to the relevant Gaol and to the Prisoners Barracks, Hobart, which was to hold the convict before their conveyance to Port Arthur.
