The facility was opened in December 1939 as the May Shaw Memorial Hospital under the management of the Swansea Bush Nursing Association. In 1957 Bush Nursing was renamed the District Nursing Service. In 1956-57 the hospital had 4 in-patient beds and 4,153 out-patient visits. By 1975-76 there were 2,518 out-patient visits and 1,257 home nursing patients.
