Index to records of the Nomenclature Board organised alphabetically by place name. It includes references to other nomenclature records where the researcher may find additional information relating to the place they are researching. The details given vary from card to card but generally include, the name of the municipality and the county and parish in which the locality exists and original name. Other details may include, working plan number, map sheet number, Map reference, Plan Drawer Number and working plan number. These references will not lead the researcher to any further information. They were part of the general mapping system used at the time. The map references are to the working maps in use at the time and the numbers which appear after the county and parish are the revised eastings and northings used at the time. The Map Sheet number may appear in the Map Sheet File series but this is not always the case.

The references that do lead to further information are the registered number written in the top left corner, the Correspondence file number and the Decision and Meeting number. The registered number can be found in the Nomenclature register which is organised numerically by this number. The Correspondence number is a file number which if still in existence, can be found in the Nomenclature Map Sheet Files. The meeting number refers to the meeting of the Nomenclature Board at which the nomenclature was discussed. This can be located in AF906, Minutes of the meetings of the nomenclature board.

The decision number can be looked up in the Decision Register, which provides further details such as the authority or person who submitted the name for consideration, the name submitted, the final outcome and gazette reference.
