Series notes:
W E L H Crowther joined the Austalian Army Medical Services in 1913. In March 1915 he was posted to the 7th Field Ambulance, with the rank of Captain. He served at Gallipoli September-October 1915; falling ill, he was sent to Italy to convalesce. On returning to duty in early 1916 he was transferred to the General Hospital and Australian Casualty Clearing Station at Rouen, France. In February 1916 he was promoted to Major. At Ypres in September 1917, whilst serving with the 14th Field Ambulance, he remained on duty after being wounded in action. In October 1917 he was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel, and appointed to the 5th Field Ambulance. He commanded the field hospital at Passchendaele. In 1918 he was Mentioned in Despatches for 'specially meritorious service' and awarded a DSO. He returned to Australia in January 1919. He served again during the Second World War as Deputy Assistant Director Hygiene with the 6th Military District (Australia) and Commanding Officer of the 9th Australian Casualty Clearing Station.

His diaries contain original photographs, newspaper cuttings, and ephemera.

Items CRO2/1/11 and CRO2/1/12 - folders of papers relating to the Field Ambulance in France - include orders, despatches, maps, reports, unit rolls and casualty lists.
