This series of registered files appears to continue the sequence used by the Chief Police Magistrate from 1847 (POL310). The residual duties of the CPM devolved on the Colonial Secretary after the reorganisation of the police in 1857 and the phasing out of the office of CPM. (See 20 Vic 23 & Government Notice No.97, 10 July 1857 - HTG 14/7/1857 p615-6).

The correspondence for 1857-58 is missing. POL310 ends in July 1856 (File 6000) and CSD25 begins at file 7500 in 1859. The files relating to charitable matters were previously included in CSD1, where many continued to be filed, and applications for admission to Orphan Schools are found in SWD26 though some are in CSD25.
