System of Arrangement:
Alpha-numeric where the letter component has meaning eg. SUR = Surveys, P & L = Permits and Licences, FM = Forestry Management etc. The series is controlled by register FC31. This register lists files under the various classification headings. It only works, however, for files no longer needed by the department in 1958, the year of their transfer to AOT. All those files which remained in current use were top-numbered in a straight numerical filing system, which became FC5. Potentially a file referenced in FC31 can be missing from FC4 because the department was still using the file and had top-numbered it and incorporated it into its new filing system (FC5). In this situation FC30 needs to be used to translate the old number to the new one. Occasionally, however, FC31 does have a new file number (FC5 number) annotated next to the old one, prefixed by the initials F.N. Series FC 4 now has an item level listing.;;
