Series notes:
No personal details are recorded on the earlier exemptions which were handwritten. However, from 1892 a printed certicate was issued to the master and a butt retained by the Marine Board. The butt records the master's name, address, certificate number and date and from 1903 the fee paid and signatures of the master warden and secretary were recorded.
Some non-issued or cancelled certificates remain in the volumes.
