James Montagu Travers Butler was born Aug 9th, 1896, the son of Charles William Butler and Beatrice (nee Travers). He worked in the Drawing Office at the Zinc Works, Hobart before leaving Tasmanian on the 'Loongana' on April 30th 1920 for trip to the UK, arriving back in Hobart on 10 December 1921. Note at back of 1920 diary lists subjects passed at the University of Tasmania including Pure and Applied Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Surveying and Mechanical Engineering.
