Series notes:
Samuel Smith Travers (born England 26/03/1826, died Bellerieve, Tasmania 8 /03/1888) married Louisa Darbyshire (born 13/07/1834, died England, 1911) in 1857. They had fourteen children. Their eldest child Beatrice Maria Travers (born England 22/04/1858, died Hobart 1936) married C. W. Butler and lived at 'Ashfield', Sandy Bay. Samuel and Louisa Travers migrated to Tasmania in 1870 and lived at 'Derwentwater', Sandy Bay; 'Boa Vista', New Town and 'Heathfield' Davey Street, Hobart. The journal includes extracts from Mrs Darbyshire's journal (1856 - 1857), Louisa's journal of the voyage to Hobart: social life in Hobart and a family chronology to 1913. It appears to have been transcribed c1968, perhaps by a member of the Butler family, but the location of the original letters is unknown. Some photographs are included.
