This series consists of a single volume register of Drawing Office folders of the Mechanical Engineering Branch of the Tasmanian Government Railways (after 1978 AN Tasrail). The register is divided into three sections entitled 'Numerical List', 'Sectional Index' and 'Alphabetical Index'.

The 'Numerical List' consists of entries in four columns; the Drawing Office folder number, the Chief Mechanical Engineers file reference number, the title of the folder and a remarks column.

The 'Sectional List' is divided into fifteen parts and folders indexed within these as a quick means of finding information. These are entitled:

1] Locomotive/steam,

2] Locomotive/diesel,

3] Rail and gang cars,

4] Cars and vans,

5] Wagons,

6] Rolling stock/general,

7] Machine tools,

8] Workshops/general,

9] Papers and technical data/general,

10] Miscellaneous including fuel oil,

11] Outside firms,

12] Carriage of goods and traffic/general,

13] Cranes, hoists, weighbridges and turntables,

14] CCE [Chief Civil Engineer]

15] Mechanical handling.

The 'Alphabetical Index' operates as a subject index by key word. As well as being divided alphabetically by the first letter of the key word in title it is further sub-divided by the first vowel to occur in the word.
