Series notes:
This series consists of a photocopy of an index to railway plans created in the Public Works Department. The copy was made, around 1970, by Lindsay Whitham, an employee of PWD with an interest in railway history (particularly on the west coast of Tasmania). In 1991 he provided this copy of his copy to the National Archives in Hobart as it documents plans that are now part of series P1330.
The Register begins with a note explaining the division of Tasmania into six districts for the purposes of colour coding the plans. Each section of line which is designated in the Register has a coloured symbol next to the title. This same symbol is attached to the drawing in the form of a cardboard tag and annotated with the individual drawing number. (However the photocopy is in black and white and many of these tags have become detached from the plans over the years.)
Most entries in the Register are undated. Occasionally, the entry is quite extensive, giving such detail as the title of the feature, the name of the engineer, date of drawing, whether in plan, section etc, its position along a particular line, whether traced, lithographed etc, the number of sheets included in the drawing number, the gauge of line and whether and who has signed the drawing. Cross-references appear to have been added along the way, as have notes of plans and level books being loaned to other Departments.
"Press" numbers at the top of the page for each new section of line refer to a storage system used to house the plans in rolled form when originally kept in Hobart.
These records are part of the holdings of the Tasmanian Archives
