Series notes:
This series consists of outline diagrams of rolling stock used on the Government owned railways of Tasmania. The outline diagrams are small schematic drawings of locomotives, carriages, wagons, goods handling equipment and self propelled rail cars. The earliest drawings are of rolling stock acquired from the Main Line Railway Company and the Launceston and Western Railway Company and date from about 1875. The most recent drawings are of the diesel electric locomotives used by AN Tasrail in 1993.

The original diagrams were published in loose leaf binders for distribution amongst some railway employees for use in identifying different classes of rolling stock.

The drawings typically show the outline of a particular class of rolling stock and include a variety of measurements of height, length, wheel dimensions etc and name some pieces of equipment, for example the manufacturer of the turbo generators and headlights on steam locomotives. Locomotive and self propelled rail car drawings often have additional details relating to motive power, tractive effort, working weight, adhesive ratio, haulage ratings and in the case of steam locomotives details of the fire box and tubing areas. In some cases specific detail of the number of units in service of a particular class of locomotive, the dates they entered service and their subsequent disposal is noted. Carriage drawings sometimes include a plan of seating arrangements and details of conversion from or to different uses or configuration.

The master set of original diagrams from which published copies were produced was kept in the Mechanical Engineering Branch at Invermay and often referred to in answering inquiries from the public relating to equipment no longer in service.

These records are part of the holdings of the Tasmanian Archives
