Series notes:
This series consists of separate registers containing service histories for Tasmanian locomotives, self-propelled rail cars, rolling stock, camp wagons and containers. They lists the history , including disposal, of all carriages, railcars and trailers, vans, wagons and sundry rolling stock (eg cranes, coal hoppers) of the Tasmanian Goverment Railways and AN Tasrail.

While the some of the volumes appear to start at a point prior to the Government takeover of a number of private railway companies in the 1870 - 1890 period the consistency of handwriting for this part of the registers suggests that they were probably written retrospectively.

Rolling stock is covered in a single volume entilted "Rolling Stock Register". It was also locally known as the "Doomsday Book". The register is in five sections, namely, carriages, railcars and trailers, vans, wagons and sundry. Each section lists the class and number of each item of rolling stock, followed by a description and remarks column, the makers name, date in service, weight, materials used in construction, whether cylinder or piped brakes, cost of construction, whether rebuilt, whether converted, its condition and date of write off, what if anything it was replaced by and a file reference.

The locomotive histories cover steam locomotives and steam self propelled rail cars [SP's]. They are contained in a single two pin blue covered binder with a label on the front cover bearing the title "Locomotive records - 3'6" Gauge". It contains two stardard printed sheets for each locomotive. At the top right hand corner is a circle divided horizontally with the alphabetical locomotive class letter on the top and the individual locomotive number within the class on the bottom. The front sheet is entitled "TGR [Tasmanian Government Railways] Locomotive Record" and is divided into 3 sections. The first contains entries for" Class, Number, Gauge, Manufacturer, Date on road, How charged, Approximate weight, Original tractive power, Boiler number and Working Pressure" [in pounds]. The second section is entitled "Description and Remarks" and contains information usually found on outline diagrams, such as, wheel configuration, cylinder dimensions, wheel diameters, type of valve gear and modifications to the firebox. The third section consists of columns for "Date, History, Authority, Amount [in pounds], and File" . The final entry in the "History" column usually gives one or more of the following elements of the disposal of the locomotive; date last ran, date written off, name and address of purchaser, current boiler number at date of disposal, price and file number.

The register for Self-Propelled Rail Cars is similar in format to that for Locomotives. It is also in a blue two pin folder. It only contains entries for Diesel Patrol [DP] cars. The entries for Steam Patrol cars are at the rear of the Locomotive register.

Camp Wagons are registered in a brown coloured folder with blue taped spine. They are sequentially numbered from 1 to 173. The register has column entries entitled "Camp Number, Built from and Date written off or sold". There are also a number of audits of wagon and carriages at the front of this volume.

Containers are registered in a dark blue two ring binder with the title "Container Register - to be returned to Mechancial Records" on a card taped to the front cover. There are three loose sheets inside the cover that advise on numbering and nomenclature to be used for identifiying containers. The register is in alphabetical order according to the class of container. Each page of the register has columns with the class prefix followed by the individual container number, a comments column with information such as relevant drawing numbers and information relating to the sale, writing off, conversion or transfer of the container, a date in service and original cost. The date range for this register is 1954 to 1983.

The "Rolling Stock Register" has been microfilmed.
