Series notes:
This series consists of coloured cloth folders containing information collected from suppliers and manufacturers of machinery and equipment used in the operation of the Tasmanian Government Railways. This includes printed materials, such as promotional pamphlets, specifications, manuals and operators instructions from manufacturers of rolling stock, locomotives, track maintenance equipment etc. Materials lists and specifications from suppliers of raw materials, such as metals, fastenings, fittings, and tools used in the repair and manufacture of engines and rolling stock as carried out in the Workshops are also found in these folders. There are also folders dealing with theoretical issues, such as occur in engineering design issues associated with bridge building, track maintenance, soil subsidence etc. These folders contain articles and reprints from engineering and railways journals, hand written design calculations, correspondence with other railway operators and reports of investigations and study tours of other railways. The folders were housed in pigeon holes in the Mechanical Engineering vault at Invermay, Launceston, until transferred in their entirety to Australian Archives in January 1994. The folders are sewn of a green or brown oiled cloth and have the topic and folder number painted on the cover. Some of the later folders have been renamed and a few are empty. Some of the folders refer to machinery installed in the Invermay Railway Workshops. This includes overhead cranes, lathes, presses etc. Some of this machinery was transferred to the new workshops at East Tamar Junction, some was sold at clearing sales in 1994 and some was left at Invermay as part of the historical content of the site. Some of the printed materials and manuals in this series are similar to, or duplicated, in the Mechanical Branch technical library.

These records are part of the holdings of the Tasmanian Archives
