Series notes:
This series consists of 'Standard Instructions' issued by the Chief Mechanical Engineer's Office for use within the Workshops. They are issued to Workshop staff involved in the construction and maintenance of rolling stock, including locomotives, and they are intended to standardise procedures carried out by them. They cover such topics as the manufacture and maintenance procedures to be followed in dealing with such equipment such as fusible plugs, vacuum brakes, case hardened bushes, side bearer clearances etc. There are also instructions on the operating procedures to be followed when performing such tasks as ultrasound testing, removing asbestos, examining and lubricating various rolling stock. The instructions are issued using a single number to identify them and a master set has been compiled which includes instructions that have been replaced, cancelled or superseded as well as those still in use. There is an index at the front of the master set.
These records are part of the holdings of the Tasmanian Archives
