Series notes:
This series consists of miscellaneous items that chart and document measurements of events, such as landslips under rails, and routine recordings of the three dimensional existence of the rail network in Tasmania. Routine recordings for quantitative assessment and information of those employees working the system are present along with measurements of rail displacement, that potentially affect the safety and operation of trains, curve and cant recordings and steel track weights of the entire system for track rehabilitation purposes, track deviations and clearance diagrams for operating oversized loads across the rail system. Some of the language used in titling the charts and documents in this series is peculiar to railway civil engineering. It is arcane at first appearance but has existed in common use amongst rail civil engineers since the inception of rail. Curve, cant deviation, clearance, bending moments etc have precise and well-established meanings that mostly describe some three-dimensional attribute important for the safety and operation of trains over the system.

There are a variety of record formats present in this series. They range from raw data recorded on roll charts [curve and cant recordings of portions of the track network recorded by Malcolm Cash during the 1980's] to published, or at least updated, information [including tunnel/station clearances, curve and gradient measurements and distances and deviations for all lines in either imperial or metric units].A single number system of control has been imposed upon this series by National Archives Staff. The records in this series were collected together as a result of a project to control a large mass of unaccessioned materials originally collected during the 1990's [ie. immediately preceding the sale of the Tasmanian rail operation from the Commonwealth Government's Australian National Railway Commission to private ownership]. Other similar records can be found in series P2122

All records in this series were collected from the Invermay Railways Workshop site in Launceston in the 1990's.

These records are part of the holdings of the Tasmanian Archives
