This series consists of raw data and correspondence used to collate returns of rolling stock of the Tasmanian Government Railways, later Australian National Railways Commission [trading as Tasrail] for inclusion in the Annual Report of the Railways. It documents various activities associated with the manufacture, maintenance, acquisition and disposal of wagons, carriages and locomotives used on the Tasmanian railway system. Annual reporting requirements of the Tasmanian State Government and, later, the Commonwealth. Paper documents in folders, including charts with lists. One item is a bound inventory list A single number system of arrangement and control was imposed by the National Archives in 2006. Material was arranged into chronological order (as this is the likely to be the original order) by National Archives Hobart Office staff in 2006.

The section reports were condensed into the Annual Reports furnished by the railways to Parliament. All items in this series are from the Invermay Railways Workshops site, Office of the Chief Mechanical Engineer.
